Diplomiral je leta 1960 z univerzitetno Prešernovo nagrado na Pravni fakulteti v Ljubljani, leta 1965 pa doktoriral iz pravnih znanosti. Po prvi zaposlitvi na Inštitutu za narodnostna vprašanja je bil najprej docent in izredni profesor nato pa redni profesor za mednarodno pravo in mednarodne odnose na sedanji Fakulteti za družbene vede. Objavil je številne članke in razprave v domačih in tujih strokovnih publikacijah in šest knjig, od tega štiri s področja mednarodnega prava
- Mednarodno pravno varstvo manjšin [The International Legal Protection of Minorities],
- Pravica narodov do samoodločbe [The Right of Nations to Self-Determination],
- Pravni status slovenske manjšine v Italiji [The Legal Status of the Slovene Minority in Italy],
- skupaj s prof. M. Pogačnikom Izbrane teme mednarodnega prava [Selected Topics of International Law]
ter temeljno delo o zunanji politiki:
- Zunanja politika – Osnove teorije in praksa [Foreign Policy – The Basics of Theory and Practice], objavljeno tudi v angleščini in albanščini.
Sodeloval je s prispevki na številnih konferencah in posvetovanjih.

Ernest Petrič , Ph. D., was born in 1936. He is an outstanding personality well established in particular in academic and diplomatic circles in Slovenia. He is professor emeritus of international law and international relations at Nova Univerza (New University), and was lecturing since 1964 in Slovenia and abroad at several universities. He was dean at the Faculty of Social Sciences at University of Ljubljana and was awarded in 1977 for excellence of his research. He published 11 monographies and several hundred articles on topics of international law , international relations and foreign policy. He served as ambassador to several countries and international organisations, including USA, India, Austria, United Nations (New York), IAEA, OSCE. He was judge and President of Constitutional Court of Republic of Slovenia and has served as state secretary at the Ministry for Foreign Affaires. He is member of UN International Law Commission and was its chairman. He was decorated by Yugoslavia, Slovenia, Spain, Hungary and USA.
